Tropes: Autistic Character (Kabru & Laios Touden)

Summary: In an effort to help Laios' struggles with social interaction, Kabru explains one of its less-talked-about aspects.

For the People with Disabilities Drabblefest on Dreamwidth! The prompt being, "Doesn't everybody do that?"

Laios liked it when Kabru explained the many unspoken rules of socialization to him; Kabru liked it too, for the most part. While it was difficult to get past the initial mental barrier of 'I should not be speaking about this,' once it was wrestled aside, it ended up proving beneficial for both of them. Laios learned about how humans ticked, and Kabru was given the chance to explain even the nichest details of his interest.

Still, Laios needed a lot more explanation than the average person.

"You... mirror people," said Laios — less like it was a question, more like a statement. His expression was open, curious.

Kabru nodded curtly in return. "Especially when it comes to small talk, which I know you struggle with," he explained. He looked away as he spoke, bringing a hand to his chin. "For example: earlier, you spoke to an older individual who brought up the weather. In this case, you will want to also have a straightforward, lighthearted opinion on the weather. What was it that she said?"

Laios hummed, furrowing his brows. "I think... it was about the rain...?"

"So, she says, for example, 'These thunderstorms have been rough.' What you respond with is, 'They have! But we sure needed them, didn't we?'"

Before Laios could respond, Kabru, now grinning, pointed to him, speaking a touch faster. "And that is almost always the appropriate answer to small talk about the weather! Much like 'good' is to 'how are you', 'but we needed it, didn't we?' is the correct response."

Laios nodded thoughtfully, before breaking into a grin. "I get it! Thanks!" He sighed, before adding, "I tried asking Marcille about it, but she always just says there's no 'correct' response."

"That's ridiculous. Of course there is. She does this, too, after all."

There is a nonzero chance that I will be completing literally every single prompt for this 'fest with autistic Kabru because I'm not right in the head.
